Animals live in a variety of different kinds of homes like burrow, tree, thicket, water, nest, cave, den, hive, lodge etc.

 

Nests

A nest is a place of refuge to hold an animal's eggs or provide a place to live or raise offspring. They are usually made of some organic material such as twigs, grass, and leaves; or may simply be a depression in the ground, or a hole in a tree, rock or building. Human-made materials, such as string, plastic, cloth, hair or paper, may also be used.

They are built primarily by birds, but also by mammals e.g. squirrels, fish, insects e.g. wasps, termites and honey bees and reptiles e.g. snakes and turtles.

  • An eagle's nest is called an eyrie.
  • A squirrel's or ringtail possum's nest is called a drey.
  • A hare's nest is called a form.
  • A beaver's nest is called a lodge.
  • A pheasant's nest is called a nide.
  • A wasp's nest is called a vespiary.

Caves

Many animals like the protection and shelter of rock caves for homes. A cave can provide shelter from the sun on hot days. It can also provide shelter from the wind and cold. Cave-inhabiting animals are often categorized as

  • Cave-limited species known as troglobites like Alabama cave shrimp, cave fish, and cave salamanders and beauty rat snake.
  • Species that can live their entire lives in caves , but also occur in other environments known as troglophiles like gray bat and Mexican free-tailed bat and some species of cave crickets.
  • Species that use caves, but cannot complete their life cycle fully in caves known as trogloxenes
  • Animals not in one of the previous categories. some aquatic animals and insects also live in caves.
 
Burrow

A burrow is a hole or tunnel excavated into the ground by an animal to create a space suitable for habitation. A number of mammals, amphibians, fish, reptiles and birds lives in burrow also numerous invertebrates including insects, spiders, sea urchins, crustaceans, clams and worms lives in burrow.
